Finn Gold Cup - GBR Team - Top five for Ainslie on first day of world championships
RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL-(15-2-2004) On the first day of racing at the Finn Gold Cup,
defending British world champion and double Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie
made a steady start to his quest for a third consecutive world title.
In the one race today, which was sailed in the harbour in 6-8 knots of
breeze, Ainslie scored a fifth place behind Jonas Hogh-Christensen of
Denmark whilst Michael Maier of Czechoslovakia took the race win. Second
place went to Dutch sailor Jaap Zielhuis with the 1996 Olympic Champion
Mateusz Kusznierewicz of Poland finishing third. Fellow Team GBR sailor
Charlie Cumbley put in a good result to finish eighth.
A total of 53 boats representing 23 countries have made the trip to Rio to
compete in the week long event which concludes on Friday 20 February.
